Clinical Study of Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma

Abstract
Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is an uncommon tumor found in the Nasopharynx of the adolescent male.
It is highly vascular, locally invasive, nonencapsulated lesion which considers to be clinically malignant, but histologically benign.
Author studied the clinical analysis and treatment of 16 cases of nasopharyngel angiofibroma, and operated specimen confirmed by histopathological study and 3 cases diagnosed clinically at Dep¢¥t of otolaryngology, Chonnam University Medical school during June 1, 1973-October 31, 1982.
Following results were obtained.
1. 17cases were males and 2 cases female
2. Age distribution shows 9 to 33 year old, which was an average of 17 years.
3. The most frequent symptoms were nasal obstruction (16cases) epistaxis (15cases), and duration of onset was from 3 month to 3yrs, Seven cases had been received operation under the diagnosis of other rhinologic disease.
4. Surgical treatment were carried out, thirteen cases transpalatal, one case lateral rhinotomy, one case lateral rhinotomy and transpalatal, one case oropharyngeal & transnasal approach.
5. Hormonal therapy were carried out; Estrogen (7 cases) or Stilbesterol (11 cases) administration for 3 or 4 weeks. After hormonal therapy, we observed the decrease of their size and vascularity, grayish white discoloration, and the increased solidity of the tumor masses.
6. We observed that the blood loss was lessend with the pulling of external carotid artery with two or three layer of Penrose of Rummel clamp applied to this vessel during resection.
